Is A.I. Racist? WOW...Well I guess it depends were you land on the ever changing definition. If you are thinking in lines of a superiority thing, that one race is better than others....I guess A.I. doesn't even count as a race. Although we do imagine it thinks it's better than us? In regards to just a characterization or cultural stereotypes...We probably haven't used it enough or for situations that would expose anything even if it were there. It's likely any diversity or lack of, may be influenced by a program writer as to what "Young Man" would/should look like?
We haven't prompted it to "show young men in a parking lot listening to music coming from their cars." With the A.I. then creating....
Well mid sentence we tried this prompt out here was the result:

Then we tried to play on a stereotype.....show young men looting a jewelry store and smashing the counters and stealing expensive watches and jewelry.

Not the typical Evening News clip we were thinking of is it. 🙂
HOWEVER, this does get us back to what we have noticed overall and we'll get back to the sexier photos. There just isn't much "Black" representation in the AI images we are getting. Typically we don't use it as a prompt ( "Prompt" being the description or guidance A.I.using for generate what you are seeking)
We'll create some sort of description and like:
Curvy woman with big boobs and thick thighs. Wearing satin bra and PVC Shorts. She is walking in front of her house. The morning sun providing the light. Her long and colorful Kimono moving in the breeze. She is enjoying the moment.
Then after a few results we will change the hair color.... blonde hair, red hair, dark hair, and to be fair when adding dark hair we do get some black women in the results, but not often.
Now if we do prompt a skin tone or outright race we get matching results:
So Is A.I. racist? Our experiences over the last year of goofing around with text to image AI is.... There probably is an under representation of Blacks in the results. Overall it's well mixed with more White, Asian, & Latino looking characters than Black being created. Now, is that how the population breaks down??? Is it due to more or less online content from one race vs another that A.I. is "Learning" from???
It does seem that if you do not put in a skin color or race we get far more "Whites" in the results.
Maybe it's the crazy outfits we use for prompts who knows.
